The State Security Service (SSS) has raised an alert about an imminent attack on communities in Ondo State by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists. According to the memo dated October 20, 2025, the terrorists are targeting Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko communities in Akoko North West Local Government Area and Owo town in Owo Local Government Area.
The SSS has urged the military to scale up security in the state to prevent the attacks, citing surveillance on potential soft targets in the mentioned locations. This development comes three years after suspected ISWAP members attacked a Catholic church in Owo, killing over 40 people.
In response to the threat, the Ondo State Police Command has deployed operational assets to churches and mosques across the state, particularly on worship days, to prevent potential attacks. The Amotekun Corps has also been placed on red alert and is working closely with other security agencies to ensure the safety of residents.
Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through emergency lines. The police command urged media organizations and the public to desist from sharing unverified information or fake news that may cause undue tension or panic.
