The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is introducing a contactless biometric capture system for driver’s license issuance, marking a significant shift towards digitalization in Nigeria’s motor vehicle administration. This new system allows for on-the-spot printing of licenses, eliminating the need for temporary documents. The advanced technology captures fingerprints without physical contact, ensuring a seamless experience. With this system, licenses are printed immediately after biometric capture, reducing waiting periods.
The digitalized system is fully integrated with the National Identification Number database for efficient identity verification. This development is expected to reduce delays, improve efficiency, and enhance transparency in the driver’s license issuance process. The instant issuance of driver’s licenses will eliminate long waiting periods, while the streamlined process will integrate existing driving schools, Vehicle Inspection Office, and certification processes.
The FRSC has already commenced the rollout of the contactless system, which will be implemented across the country. The Corps aims to clear the existing backlog of 800,000 unprocessed licenses by November 2025, with a current daily production capacity of 40,000 licenses. The printing facility has been upgraded to print an average of 15,000 driver’s licenses daily, which will help to clear the backlog before the second week of November 2025.
