The Nigeria Police Force has arrested Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel to detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, along with several other protesters in Abuja. The arrest occurred during a protest demanding Kanu’s release, who has been held by the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021.
Ejimakor announced his arrest via a post on his X account, stating, “We’ve just been arrested. Myself, Prince Emanuel and others. We are at FCT COMMAND CID. Myself, Fine Boy and others. No 1 Zaria Street, Garki 2, Abuja.” He had earlier accused the police of firing teargas to disperse peaceful demonstrators, which caused irritation to his eyes and throat.
The protesters had gathered in the Federal Capital Territory to demand Kanu’s immediate release, citing renewed agitations across the Southeast and Abuja. The demonstration is part of ongoing efforts by supporters urging the Nigerian government to comply with court orders for Kanu’s release.
Kanu’s detention has sparked controversy, with his supporters claiming it’s politically motivated and demanding his freedom. The case has drawn attention to the ongoing tensions between IPOB and the Nigerian government.
