The Federal Government has denied removing Mathematics as a compulsory subject for students registering for Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) to secure admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the recent policy change introduces a more inclusive and flexible approach to tertiary admission requirements, but does not exempt students from registering and sitting for Mathematics.
The Ministry emphasized that English and Mathematics are “vital tools for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning”. The reform aims to expand access to tertiary education, promote equitable access, inclusivity, and human capital development.
The Federal Government’s clarification aims to provide clarity on the new policy and reassure students, parents, and educators that Mathematics remains an essential subject in the Nigerian education system.
By clarifying this policy, the Federal Government hopes to promote a more inclusive and equitable education system, while also emphasizing the importance of Mathematics in the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The clarification has brought relief to many students, parents, and educators who were concerned about the implications of the policy change.
The Federal Ministry of Education’s statement has put to rest any speculation about the role of Mathematics in the Nigerian education system, and it is expected that this clarification will guide the implementation of the new policy.
