
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has appointed his nephew, global Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as the Chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund. The appointment was announced by the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, during a courtesy visit by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun State chapter.
According to Adewusi, Davido accepted the role without hesitation and is expected to leverage his global influence and network to attract private investment and drive development across various sporting activities in the state. The government believes Davido Osun’s sports ecosystem with substantial funding and international attention.
The Osun State Government is also working on establishing the Osun State Sports Commission, which will serve as the central agency responsible for sports administration, development, and policy implementation. Additionally, the government has commenced the renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium, aiming to transform it into a world-class arena capable of hosting national and international events.
The appointment has generated mixed reactions, with some Nigerians expressing concerns over Governor Adeleke’s continued appointment of family members to key positions. Notably, he had earlier appointed another nephew, Tunji Adeleke, as Chairman of the Board of Local Government in 2023.
