Abuja witnessed a counter-protest as a group of demonstrators gathered around the Labour House bridge in the central area of the city. The protesters, who arrived in about three 30-seater Coaster buses, waved Nigerian flags and held placards with inscriptions like “No Pressure to the Rule of Law”.
The demonstrators seemed to be against the demand for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Instead, they appeared to be supporting the rule of law and possibly Kanu’s trial.
The police were present at the scene, with barricades mounted to block vehicular movement. However, the protest remained peaceful, and the group dispersed about 20 minutes later.
The counter-protest highlights the complex and sensitive nature of the issue, with different groups holding varying views on Kanu’s detention and the IPOB agitation.
