The Federal Government has filed a lawsuit against Omoyele Sowore and three others, seeking to stop them from organizing a protest scheduled for October 20, 2025. The protest, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, aims to pressure the government to release detained separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally.
The lawsuit was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja with case number FHC/ABJ/2202/2025. According to the government, the protest is an attempt to incite disorder and undermine the rule of law.
Justice M.G. Umar refused to grant the government’s requested ex parte injunction, instead directing that Sowore be formally put on notice and adjourning the matter to October 21.
The planned protest has garnered mixed reactions, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former President Goodluck Jonathan endorsing the campaign for Kanu’s release. However, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, has distanced itself from the protest, citing concerns about potential unrest and destabilization.
Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention since 2015, facing treason charges. Sowore, a human rights activist, has been vocal about Kanu’s detention and has organized several protests and campaigns for his release. The case has sparked a national debate on the issue of detention and human rights.
