The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has clarified that the recent Presidential Prerogative of Mercy exercise is still at the final administrative stage and no inmate has been released from custody. According to Prince Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the process involves a standard review to ensure all names and recommendations comply with established legal and procedural requirements before any instrument of release is issued.
This stage is crucial in ensuring that only duly qualified individuals benefit from the President’s mercy. After approval by the Council of State, the instrument for implementing the decision concerning each beneficiary will be issued and forwarded to the Controller-General of Corrections for necessary action.
Fagbemi emphasized that the government is committed to transparency and due diligence, and there is no delay in the process. “The rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness,” he stated. The public is assured that as soon as all legal and procedural checks are concluded, they will be duly informed.
The Attorney-General appreciated the public’s vigilance and constructive feedback, which strengthen institutional integrity. He encouraged public engagement, noting that it demonstrates Nigerians’ care for justice and good governance.
