Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has approved a 100% salary increase for state councillors, raising their monthly earnings from approximately ₦300,000 to over ₦600,000. This move is seen as a morale booster for the councillors. One councillor expressed gratitude to the governor for the quick approval, describing the move as a significant boost to their morale.
Governor Otti has also been active in improving the welfare of other groups in the state. Earlier, he approved a monthly stipend of ₦250,000 for traditional rulers, with members of the Traditional Rulers Council at the state and local government leadership level receiving an additional ₦100,000 monthly. This brings the total monthly stipend for traditional rulers to ₦350,000.
The governor has also initiated efforts to improve the salaries of civil servants in the state, citing the need to align with current economic realities. He has instructed a review of the salary structure to ensure it reflects the current economic situation. Additionally, Governor Otti has announced plans to pay December salaries and 13th-month salaries before December 20, 2025.
In the education sector, the governor has introduced a discriminatory compensation package for teachers, which would see their salaries increase significantly. For example, a teacher earning ₦20,000 would now earn ₦50,000. The governor has also commenced the implementation of an out-of-school policy, aimed at eradicating the phenomenon of out-of-school children in Abia.
These moves are part of Governor Otti’s efforts to boost the welfare of Abia State workers and stakeholders, and to improve the overall quality of life for residents. The governor has also emphasized his commitment to completing ongoing projects and improving the state’s infrastructure.
