The Federal Government has filed a lawsuit against Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi over alleged defamatory statements made against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Nwebonyi reportedly described Akpoti-Uduaghan as “a habitual accuser,” “a woman who uses her gender as a weapon,” and “a mother of six from different men” during various media appearances.
The government maintains these statements were made maliciously and with reckless disregard for the truth, constituting criminal defamation under Section 391 of the Penal Code Act. If convicted, Nwebonyi faces potential penalties, including imprisonment, a fine, or both.
This isn’t Nwebonyi’s first controversy; a socio-political group has called for his recall over his conduct in the Natasha-Akpabio feud, describing his actions as “disgraceful” and unbecoming of a senator.
Akpoti-Uduaghan has also filed a separate N5 billion lawsuit against Nwebonyi for defamation, seeking damages for emotional distress, embarrassment, and harm to her reputation.
