
Former First Lady and Founder of the Better Life Programme for Rural Women, Dr Maryam Babangida(late) said the programme, launched in 1986, was a successful programme that impacted positively on women from all spheres of life.
Speaking at the inaugural consultative meeting of African Women’s Health Initiative, a Non Governmental Organisation whose objective is to participate in the development and promotion of better health care for African women, Mrs Babangida said the programme remains a benchmark for national development programmes, and a bonafide component of governance at the highest level in Nigeria, ensuring the establishment of the National Commission for Women, which was later upgraded to the Ministry of Women Affairs.
